The PCNI through its subcommittee on economic development has disclosed that the sum of 3 trillion will suffice to rebuild the North East. The chairman subcommittee on economic development, Hon. Yusuf YakubBuba made this statement at a Press briefing while on a fact finding and stakeholder’s engagement tour to Bauchi and Gombe state.
The subcommittee members led by Hon. Yusuf Buba visited the Governors of both states and had a town hall meeting with all stakeholders i.e Traditional Rulers, Local Government Chairmen, National Assembly Members, State assembly members, Red cross INGOs, SEMA, women organisations, Youths, IDPs e.tc with a view of identifying problems which the state faces in areas of Agriculture, international Trade, health care delivery etc.
While explaining the mandate of the PCNI at the Governors’ office,Hon. Yusuf Yakub Buba said the PCNI is the apex and coordinating body for all intervention in the North East,He said the 3trillion for the redevelopment of the North East was an aggregation of all appropriation in the budgets of MDAs, NGOs, and International Development partners e.t.c. He said PCNI will ensure through its subcommittees on Security, Education, Humanitarian Response, Finance and Economic Development that monies appropriated are judiciously used to avoid duplication of efforts and wastage through its Dashboard registration of all intervention to the region.
The Bauchi State Governor, Mohammed A. Abubakar Esq. and his Gombe counterpart who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. IliyaYa’u appreciated the Federal Government’s efforts and pledged their support at alleviating the sufferings of internally displaced people in their states.
Mohammed A. Abubakar Esq said the North East States, prior to insurgency has remained underdeveloped unlike other states in Nigeria and opined that the underlying factor of poverty and illiteracy needs to be addressed quickly. Speaking further, he said before the influx of IDPs, the state consumes about 12.5 million litters of water but as at today 25 million litres of water is needed for consumption in the state.
The Emir of Bauchi, Alh.Dr.Rilwan Suleiman Adamu who had earlier received the subcommittee applauded government’s efforts at degrading the insurgency in the region. He said that though the state was not ‘frontline states’ the impact of the insurgency in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa were felt by them through IDPs influx to the state resulting to over-stressed infrastructures and security challenges. At the end of the Town Hall meeting, Hon. Yusuf Yakub Buba assured participants that all contributions and inputs will be looked into and infused into the Buhari plan for the redevelopment of the North East Region.
