As part of the Buhari Plan’s Peace Building component the PCNI sub-committee on Security, Stabilization and Peace building led by Brig. Gen. HPZ Vintenaba recently visited Taraba State for an on-the-spot assessment in the aftermath of the recent communal conflict on the Mambilla Plateau, in Sardauna Local Government Area. The fact finding mission which took place from the 19th to the 24th of July also had two experts from the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution on the team. In Jalingo, the team met the Taraba State Deputy Governor Hon. Haruna Maru and received briefings on the remote and immediate causes of the violence from the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and heads of security agencies in the state.
Over the subsequent days, the team met with other stakeholders, conducting a two-day town hall meeting involving the Chief of Mambilla and officials of Sardauna LGA at Gembu, Local Government officials, community/religious leaders, civil society organizations and the general public. In the course of the assignment, the delegation undertook inspection visit to Nguroje IDP camp and one of the affected settlements called Wuro Yerima Kala in Tem village area. The town hall meeting was organized as a means of obtaining first-hand accounts from the residents on the genesis of the conflict and their suggestions on ways of forging a lasting peace in the area. The team has since returned to base to submit its findings.
